Building an inclusive, vibrant & resilient community
Coulter Community Trust is a Scottish charity dedicated to transforming the village and parish of Coulter in South Lanarkshire into a vibrant and inclusive community, where people of all ages feel a deep sense of belonging, pride and self-determination.
By revitalising our community spaces, strengthening social connections, and promoting wellbeing, we will secure Coulter’s long-term sustainability and create opportunities for leisure, learning, and growth.
Through community-led initiatives, strong governance, and environmental responsibility, we will enable Coulter to flourish and become a place that people aspire to live, work and visit for generations to come.
Coulter stands on what has long been described as “The Crossing of Scotland”, the watershed between the Clyde and the Tweed, beneath Culter Fell and Tinto Hill in the Southern Uplands. Its position, between Clydesdale and the Borders, has shaped a strong local identity rooted in both landscapes.
People first settled here in Neolithic times, around 8000 BC. Over the centuries, the Bronze and Iron Age communities were followed by the Romans, then Norse and Norman influence, each leaving traces across this part of Clydesdale.
The village kirk, built on an earlier pagan site, still rests on foundations dating from about 1170. In the 13th century, the Knights Templar established a hospice at Chapelhill. Later came the upheavals of the Reformation, the Covenanters and the passage of Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobite cause.
In the twentieth century, Coulter men went off to serve in both World Wars, and sixteen did not return. Today, farming – mainly sheep and cattle – remains at the heart of village life, linking the present community with its long and resilient past.
